Monday morning Russell sat at his desk with his second cup of coffee for the day. Much of his thoughts still centered on Paige. He had spent a

lot of time over the weekend in prayer about her, praying that God would open her heart to let people in, and to have the courage to let people help her. He had attended church with his parents again on Sunday. But Paige and her crew were already seated in the back when he got there and he only waved on his way in. After the service, they were gone before he made it back to the foyer.

As he sat thinking about Paige, his office phone rang. He set down his mug and answered, “Hello, this is Russell,”

“Hi Russell, this is Owen Reed, the pastor from Pine Haven Community Church.”

“Oh hi, how are you?”

“I’m doing well, thanks, how are you?”

“I’m doing pretty good.” Russell ran his finger through his hair, wondering what this call was about.

“Good, I’m glad. I noticed that you’ve been at our Sunday morning service a couple of times now with your parents, and I just wanted to call and introduce myself since we haven’t had the chance to meet at church.”

“Oh yes, my mom practically insisted that I visit the church.” The pastor laughed. “I’m sure she can be quite persuasive. I’ve known them a couple of years now, and your parents really are pillars in our church family, we’re so blessed to have them.”

“I know they really love being involved there.”

“Listen, I was wondering if you might be available to have lunch together? I know you’re not set on our church, but I would really like to just talk and get to know you and be of any help that I can in getting settled in the community.”

“Sure, I would like that a lot.”

“Excellent, are you available any time this week?”

Russell clicked over to his calendar on the computer. “Actu- ally my week is kind of full. We usually have a lunch meeting on Mondays for our management team, but this week it got pushed to Tuesday, then the rest of my week is filled up. Unless you could do today?”

“Actually, yeah, I could do today. That would be great.” “Okay, sounds good.”

“I’ve heard wonderful things about the restaurant there at the club, would you like for me to meet you there?”

“Oh no,” Russell said, almost too quickly. “I mean, it is very good, and you should definitely try it sometime if you haven’t, but I would love to get off campus, you know, stretch my legs a little.” And talk without the chance of being overheard, he thought. “Alright, that’s fine. How about The Depot, about 12:15, is that alright?”

“Sure, that’s fine, I’ll see you then.”

“Thanks Russell, I’m looking forward to it.”

Russell hung up the phone and immediately prayed, Lord, bless the time at lunch with Pastor Owen, please let me be able to speak freely about the way I feel and prepare him now with wisdom for me.
